The Multihalle Mannheim is one of the world's most remarkable timber grid shell structures and a key example of experimental lightweight architecture. Designed by architect Carlfried Mutschler and engineer Frei Otto for the 1975 Bundesgartenschau, the building remains an important milestone in architectural innovation.
As part of a showcase project, we carried out a 3D scan of the structure to create an accurate digital representation of its complex geometry. Using high-resolution reality capture technologies, millions of data points were recorded to document the building's current condition with precision.
The captured data was then transformed into a detailed Gaussian Splatting model, enabling a highly realistic and efficient visualization of the hall. Unlike traditional mesh-based workflows, Gaussian Splats preserve the richness of the scan data while delivering smooth real-time performance. The result is an immersive digital experience that allows users to explore the Multihalle's unique spatial qualities and intricate timber structure with exceptional visual fidelity, creating new opportunities for documentation, communication, and public engagement.
